This was my last week of working from home. I have elected to go back on Monday and given that there are no cases of Covid19 out here in the Northwest of Queensland, nor have there been any for the entire duration of the pandemic, my doctor has cleared me to do so. I am weary of spending every minute of every day at home and I miss my colleagues and students. My eldest son will also return to school as the Queensland government has directed that year 11s and 12s are to return on Monday (along with kindy, Prep and year 1, but that is not applicable to me). My youngest son will remain home for a further fortnight and then all going to plan, he will return on the 25th May.
The big question that is hovering over our household…
How is Mordy going to cope without me on hand 24/7?

This was splendid! An utter delight.
And this had me casting aside my books night after night for several hours at a time.

I’m now eagerly awaiting for season three to arrive at SBS On Demand. I found this series to be so compelling. Not entirely 100% historically accurate all the time, but it’s fiction based on history, not a documentary, and the embellishments are largely to enhance the entertainment value. The major historical points remain in terms of the who, what and why of characters rising and falling. Interestingly, apart from only a couple of actors, season two had a whole new cast because it was set 20 years on from the time in which season one concluded, so you get a look at three generations of Medici over the two seasons. It did lead me down the path of doing quite a bit of reading on the Medici and this era in Florence. Surprisingly, there are not a lot of books about the early Medici, many seem to focus on later generations. If you know of any that cover the ‘reign’ of Lorenzo the Magnificent, please let me know in the comments. One I particularly had my eye on is sadly no longer available.
PS: I am beyond watching a show just because it has beautiful men in it, but nevertheless, both seasons of this show have a serious haul of beautiful men! It must have taken quite the effort to round them all up. And they weren’t all young either! And they could even act! 😁

Hi Theresa, so glad you loved The Night Circus, and we just watched Aladdin last night. Loved Will Smith as Genie. That Medici series looks good. I don’t know of a good book about Lorenzo, but I had to read Machiavelli’s The Prince, which was dedicated to Lorenzo, for European history. We learned a little bit about the Medici’s – fascinating family!

On The Prince, do you mean dedicated to Lorenzo or about Lorenzo? I think, either way, that would be heavier reading than what I’m seeking. They are a fascinating family though, very much so!

Machiavelli dedicated it to Lorenzo, but it’s all about the art of ruling. It’s where the term “Machiavellian” comes from. So it’s not actually about Lorenzo, but I found it to be quite an enjoyable read, even humorous at times. Some believe Machiavelli was writing with his tongue firmly in his cheek! Hope you are having a great day with your family.

It really is, vastly different. Obviously, population density plays a part too. The Southeast of Queensland has been harder hit as they have the greatest density of population and the international airports, etc.
I am fairly confident I am doing the right thing, returning to work, but if the situation changes and we were to have an outbreak here, I suppose I would just isolate again.

The issue for us in Victoria is community transmissions. All it takes is for one returning traveller to break quarantine and social distancing rules, and then there’s an outbreak. I don’t know whether it’s easier or harder to trace contacts in the bush or the city, but I foresee a phase where young people will be out and about doing whatever they like, while older people like us will be staying at home.

I see that too. My daughter, who is 18, is chomping at the bit to get out and about as ‘normal’. I may be going back to work, but I’ll be cautious still about other places and it will be a long time before I travel to another town.

Good luck with your return to work. Strange times indeed. In Vic, we’re still all at home, although restrictions might be eased next week… I think our Sate government is taking the conservative approach of letting other states lift restrictions and seeing how they go.

Here they are still being quite cautious – I don’t envisage my kids going back until Term 3 but we’re doing surprisingly well. I’ve had teleconferences with both their teachers and they’re very happy with them so I’m happy to keep going and lucky that we can, with relatively little disruption to our household.
I also really loved The Night Circus but it’s been soooo long since I’ve read it now!

Morey is too cute. You will have to take him to work with you. At times like this it’s good to live remotely. Sydney is so densely populated we are always surrounded by people.
