The Week That Was…

Back to work this week and consequently, much less reading as well. I need to get back into the swing of being busy!

As a result of my recent book organising, this week has seen the beginning of a cataloguing frenzy. Many thanks to Shelleyrae from Book’d Out for recommending the bookcollectorz app and to Tracey from Carpe Librum for opening my eyes up to a side of Goodreads that I never knew existed.

Year 12 English for this term = Macbeth!

Glee for me, gloom for my daughter. I LOVE Macbeth. To set the stage for my enthusiasm, I sent my daughter this joke:

She claims she doesn’t get it. She will.

  3. Just thought I’d mention here, re scanning books, that even if you don’t use a phone app to catalogue books, you can use an inexpensive barcode scanner to do the same thing at Goodreads.
    BTW I was an early user of Collectorz but I didn’t reinstall it when I got a new computer because it was very slow and clunky in those days. It looks as if it has improved a lot!

It’s so exciting to be part of your cataloguing and organising frenzy 🙂 You’ll have to let us know when you’re finished and in what ways (if any) it changes your reading patterns or your selection habits. It might even influence your purchasing or browsing habits. Would love to know the difference all of this cataloguing makes to your reading.

      • WOW!!! That’s a h-u-g-e number of books! Is it one or two bookshelves worth? And funnily enough, I would’ve started with the publisher books before the physical ones, lol! I’m enjoying seeing some of your added titles in my GR newsfeed. Keep up the great work, you must be getting closer to the end by now.

      • I started with the ones I bought because I knew there were SO MANY more. It’s one bookshelf, two deep, but also quite a few baskets as well as three of those flat plastic tubs, the ones you can slide under beds. Also, it’s taken me a bit to navigate around this new app and now I have worked out how to scan my review books into a separate shelf which is much easier than if I’d just scanned them in and thought about moving them after. Weekend project, finishing that off.
        I’ll be adding a whole lot more to Goodreads soon as I’ll get started on adding in my Google Play ebooks. Once I have all the ebooks in Goodreads and all the physical books in Collectorz, I think about merging the two in both places. Kicking goals Tracey! 😁

      • Done! Every paperback/hardback/physical book I have that I haven’t read is in the database. The final count: 587
        Of these, 103 are books sent by publishers, authors or prize winnings waiting to be reviewed. The remaining are ones I’ve collected over the years.

      • I started cataloguing mine last year, but had to start again as the app somehow linked to my goodreads account. I got to 700 and wasn’t even half way😲

      • This doesn’t include any ebooks. If I factor those in, it will really blow out. I haven’t even contemplated cataloguing all the books I own that I have read. Probably three times this amount! At this stage, I really just needed a tracking system for my tbr. One day I’ll scan in the rest.

      • Congratulations, woohooo! The sense of achievement and accomplishment must be at an all time high right now. An impressive final count too, well done 🙂 It’s helpful to know the final count and also just how many are from publishers too, isn’t it? I can tell you from my ‘unsolicited want to read shelf’ on GR that the book I’ve had from a publisher the longest is Writing True Stories by Patti Miller. I received it unsolicited back in June 2017, eek!
        Are you feeling in control now having all your physical books sorted and catalogued?

  5. Have never read Shakespeare and I can’t see myself reading him in the near future or any future, lol. Love love the movie Crazy Rich Asians and Helen Hoang is on my list of authors I want to read.

  6. I’m glad you are finding it useful! At the time I began using Collectorz, goodreads was only accessible with an internet connection so it was useless while I was out shopping or whatever (back when wifi was rare, and data prohibitively slow and expensive). So the app being useable offline was perfect.
    Currently my database contains 4597 books, all of which I own in print or ebook 🙂

    • Oh!! Wow!! That’s an incredible database you’ve built up. How fantastic. I know once I add my ebooks in my numbers will swell along with all of my books I’ve already read. But at present, I wanted to just get my tbr listed, and that’s all done now. It’s a great feeling to be keeping track now.

      • I use Goodreads to keep track of my want/wishlist and read books.
        I just keep the catalogue for books I own for two reasons. 1) so I don’t accidentally buy something I already own, and 2). My parents and select friends have access to the database so that they can ‘request to borrow’ books I have 🙂

      • The whole accidentally buying something I already own is a real issue. Whipping out my phone and being able to check beforehand is ideal! You think you’ll remember every book but covers change and then it all becomes guess work.
