Challenge Check In – May

What a month on the home front! That I read any books at all is probably a miracle. But I did, and my efforts for May look like this:

#aww2019: 5 books

#AussieAuthor19: 7 books

Book Bingo with Mrs B’s Book Reviews and The Book Muse: 2 books

The Classics Eight: this is beyond the point of embarrassment now… 🤦‍♀️

Total books read in May: 12

One more than last month! It still feels low though. I keep seeing other blogger totals for the month and some of them are up over 20, some even higher – nearly a book a day. I know I can’t reach those reading numbers but even so, my monthly totals keep making me feel a bit on the ‘small reader’ side of things. Maybe I need to read my slowly does it post again and take my own advice… 🤷‍♀️
Let’s see what the next month brings!

    • Did you? That makes me feel like an achiever now! 😁
100 pages a day is quite a goal. I do that some days, but then there’s others when I wouldn’t even come close to that. It’s a juggle, that’s for sure, and it’s good to others are in the same boat!

  1. Life, when it gets in the way of our blogging, can seem like an interruption to what’s important.
But unless I’m very much mistaken, life with your family for all its travails, is much more important, and #WagsFinger comparing the number of books you’ve read with anybody else is daft. I’d much rather read a thoughtful review of a book that’s been mindfully read and I like what you do…and am always grateful when you point me to a book I’d love or would rather avoid.

    • Thanks Lisa, I needed to hear that right now! All very right, of course. The growing pile of review books when compared with my monthly total seemed to pressing on me as I wrote this up. But realistically, two thirds of those books were sent unsolicited, so they aren’t necessarily priority reading. Broken down, 12 for the month is still 3 books a week, and if I look at it that way, it’s quite a lot while working and parenting, etc.
That’s a great hashtag by the way! 😁

  2. Definitely don’t compare yourself to anyone else! Reading isn’t a competitive sport, and savouring a book is one of life’s greatest pleasures. (Writing them takes time – reading them should, too!) xo

      • I think about this often, the time it takes to write a book versus the time it takes to read it. While of course it will always be quicker to read rather write, I wonder if authors are dismayed to read in reviews that their book was read in one sitting. Reviewers mean it as a compliment, but it also indicates very quick reading — or a super long sitting! I’d say quick reading is more likely.

      • I’ve tried to read slower, but I can’t, I get frustrated if I can’t keep reading also if I’m really into a book. They definitely shouldn’t take offence. I only read slow if I’m not really into a book, or if it is written a certain way to require a slightly slower pace.

  3. To think this was the young lady who was going to follow ‘slowly does it’… I can’t imagine what you’d achieve if you went full speed 🙂
How I would love to always read a book a month, but so many other things take my time.. including blogging, genealogy, etc.
Well done to get through 12… a few of those I now want to my ever growing pile of ‘must reads’.
